Dr. Alves is a native of Portugal and is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. He moved to New Jersey at the age of 15, and soon after attended the New Jersey Institute of Technology where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Mathematics and two Masters degrees in Bio-mathematic Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. During this time he participated in significant research ranging from the mathematical modeling of human walking to improving genetic algorithms in predicting the secondary structure of proteins.

Dr. Alves then moved to Texas to pursue his medical degree from the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He graduated at the top of his class and earned the distinguished Alpha Omega Alpha award. He then moved back to the east coast to attend the internal medicine internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. He furthered his training still at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio where he completed a fellowship in cardiovascular diseases and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. During this training period at the Cleveland Clinic, he worked with some of the country's most distinguished electrophysiologists, including Dr. Andrea Natale, Dr. Patrick Tchou, Dr. Walid Saliba, Dr. Ousama Wazni and Dr. Bruce Wilkoff. He also developed an interest in clinical research and published several studies focusing on pacemaker and defibrillator lead extraction methods, focusing on overall safety and success rates. He has authored several research papers and literature on defibrillator implantation and cardiac re-synchronization therapy (CRT).

Dr. Alves moved to Southern California in June of 2010 to reside in our very own Conejo Valley Community. Here he has joined the Heart Rhythm Specialists of Southern California, where he served as the Director of the Pacemaker and Defibrillator Clinic and was also a Co-Director of the Atrial Fibrillation Center. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Alves is an avid cyclist and can often be found biking to work!
